Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena, California, aims to teach its some 2,000 students more than craft. The school's rigorous conservatory-style training combines artistic skills development and professional training, with an emphasis on art and design for social change. Fields of study include not only visual and performing arts, but also architecture, communications technologies, and automotive and industrial design. The school offers 11 undergraduate and seven graduate degrees in such areas as fine art, photography, cinema and film, environmental design and transportation systems and design. It also partners with Claremont Graduate University's Drucker School of Management to offer an MS/MBA degree program in innovation systems design, which equips students with both business savvy and inventive creativity. Admission to the school requires a strong portfolio of work — "the single most important aspect of your application," the school notes. First-year classes include integrated studies, which focus on interdisciplinary approaches to art, and humanities and sciences classes. Student can also choose the Design matters concentration and focus on solutions to social challenges. Students must attend eight 14-week terms for a bachelor's degree; students who attend three terms a year can complete their degree in two years and eight months. The school's main campus overlooks the Rose Bowl from a striking steel and glass bridge structure in the San Rafael Hills; there's also a three-building campus in downtown Pasadena and a branch in Berlin, Germany. Art Center is just a 25-minute drive from Los Angeles, where cultural institutions like the Architecture + Design Museum can amplify students' studies.
